This study intended to investigate the role of lncRNA plasmacytoma variant translocation 1 (PVT1) in rat insulinoma (INS-1) cells damaged by streptozotocin (STZ) and to identify the potential mechanisms. Firstly, PVT1 expression in INS-1 cells was assessed using RT-qPCR after STZ stimulation. After PVT1-knockdown, cell apoptosis, the contents of oxidative stress-related markers and the changes of insulin secretion were detected. Results indicated that PVT1 was remarkably upregulated after STZ stimulation. PVT1-knockdown inhibited STZ-induced oxidative stress and apoptosis of INS-1 cells. Moreover, the insulin secretory capacity was notably elevated following PVT1 silencing. Subsequently, a luciferase reporter assay verified that miR-181a-5p was directly targeted by PVT1. The rescue assays revealed that miR-181a-5p inhibitor dramatically abrogated the effects of PVT1 silencing on oxidative stress, apoptosis and insulin secretion. Taken together, these findings demonstrated that PVT1-knockdown could ameliorate STZ-induced oxidative stress and apoptosis and elevate insulin secretory capacity in pancreatic β cell via regulating miR-181a-5p, suggesting a promising biomarker in DM diagnosis and treatment.Traumatic spine injuries are a relatively common occurrence and are associated with functional impairment, loss of neurologic function, and spinal deformity. A number of spinal trauma classification systems have been developed with varying degrees of acceptance. This review provides a chronological overview of spinal trauma classification systems, with special consideration towards the benefits and pitfalls related to each. Cervical, thoracolumbar, and sacral trauma classification systems are discussed.
A review of the literature was performed. Published articles that reported on bony spinal trauma classification systems were examined. No year exemptions were identified. The reference lists of all selected articles were screened for additional studies. Article inclusion and exclusion criteria were defined a priori.
A total of 20 classification systems were identified from years 1938-2017. Of these 20 classification systems, 6 were cervical, 11 were thoracolumbar and 3 were sacral. The modernization of bony spinal trauma classification has been characterized by the development of weighted scales that include injury morphology, integrity of associated ligamentous structures and neurologic status.
For widespread acceptance and adoption in the clinical setting, future spinal trauma scoring classification will need to remain simple, highly reproducible, and impart information with regard to clinical decision-making and prognosis that may be effectively communicated across each medical specialty involved in the care of these patients.

While veterinarians play integral roles in public and environmental health, the profession has been less engaged in the topic of climate change relative to their human medical counterparts. The objective of this study was to synthesize veterinary students' perceptions and knowledge about the relationship between veterinary medicine and climate change to identify educational gaps and opportunities. An online questionnaire was disseminated to American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)-accredited veterinary colleges through the Student American Veterinary Medical Association newsletter. Respondents were overwhelmingly confident that climate change is happening, is due to human activities, and is impacting both human and animal health. Veterinary students also expressed the belief that veterinarians should take a leadership role on the issue of climate change, especially through promoting environmental sustainability in clinical practice. Despite this enthusiasm, most students reported a lack of educational opportunities within their veterinary programs. The results of this survey highlight opportunities for the development of educational resources on the topic, many of which could complement existing material such as that devoted to practice management, economics, and client communication. Veterinarians have the potential to meaningfully contribute to both mitigation and adaptation efforts around climate change; however, they must be equipped with the tools to do so.The Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine hosts student-run free clinics that offer surgical sterilization of male and female dogs and cats, with the goal of 20 surgical cases per clinic. Surgical complexity varies significantly between the surgical procedures for males (castration) and females (ovariohysterectomy) and is also influenced by weight and age for dogs. A surgical complexity scoring system was implemented to ensure the minimum number of patients while providing a diverse mix of cases. The aim of this study was to determine whether the surgical complexity scoring system accurately predicted procedure duration. Surgical records were collected between August 2016 and October 2019. Points (1-5) were assigned to each patient at the time of appointment based on species, sex, additional procedure, age and weight, and the schedule was targeted for 50 points. Each point was predicted to account for 15 minutes of surgical time. The duration for each point category was assessed via rank-sum against the predicted median. Sixteen clinics occurred during the study period, having a mean of 40.4 points and 17 patients, 29.5 (74%) of which were allocated to students. There were 264 surgeries, with 241 (91%) having complete start and end times. Surgical duration for student surgeries was not different from the estimate for each point category, with the exception of 2-points, which had a median 5.0 minutes longer than anticipated (p = 0.0004). The surgical complexity scoring system is an effective tool to optimize scheduling of educational spay/neuter mobile clinics.
